Arrested Development fans may only recognize newsman John Beard as the sitcom’s news anchor within a show, who later became host of John Beard’s To Catch A Local Predator, but as Season Four-Palooza weekend hype winds down, it’s fun to recall that this real-life news anchor was also once mustachioed and part of defusing prime-time hostage situation.
While co-anchoring KNBC’s 4 p.m. newscast in 1987, a gun-wielding mental patient broke into the Burbank, Calif., studios and took consumer reporter David Horowitz hostage live on-the-air. Horowitz was forced, at gunpoint, to read a statement from the deranged individual. Towards the end of the letter, however, the gunman’s words revealed that his weapon could not actually harm anyone, seeing as it was just a BB gun.
The gunman placed the weapon on the table and Beard acted quickly to grab it and make sure the man could not pick it back up. And so to recap:
John Beard: veteran newsman, Arrested Development mainstay, and… gun-grabber extraordinaire.
