The body of an alligator attack victim found in Brevard County, Fla. has been identified as a burglary suspect who evaded capture while being pursued by police.
According to WFTV, Matthew Riggins and an accomplice were allegedly canvassing and attempting to burglarize several homes in the Barefoot Bay area on Nov. 13. Riggins said as much to his girlfriend, who later relayed the information to police when he went missing. This corroborated reports received by the local police.
Major Tod Goodyear of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office told reporters, “Dispatch got a call from a resident that said they saw two males in all black walking behind residences.”
When Riggins’ then-unidentified body was discovered in nearby Barefoot Bay lake, recovery teams encountered an 11-foot alligator.
“So at that point, we had a belief that he was probably attacked by the alligator when he was trying to get away from police,” said Goodyear.
It was later determined that Riggins and his accomplice had run into a nearby wooded area to evade police. That’s when Riggins supposedly encountered the alligator and was attacked, later drowning as a result.
The dead burglar’s accomplice was located but refuses to cooperate with the investigation.
