Fmr. CIA Director Rebukes Clapper: ‘Unknowable’ if Russia Swung Election for Trump
Former CIA Director Michael Hayden says James Clapper is overstepping himself by suggesting that Russia’s 2016 election-meddling was the decisive factor of Donald Trump‘s presidential victory.
For the last few days, Clapper and Trump have sparred with each other over the latter’s claims that his 2016 campaign was spied upon by the FBI. The former Director of National Intelligence drew a lot of attention because of the excerpt from his new book saying Russia successfully “swung the election” to Trump.
Hayden was asked about this when he appeared today on This Week, and he told Martha Raddatz there’s no way to know for certain if Russia’s actions determined the election’s results.
“I agree that the Russians affected the election, but how much they affected is not just unknown, it is unknowable, and so we should stop talking about it,” said Hayden. “You invite folks like us on your show because we’re the fact witnesses, not because we have opinions.”
