Former Cheney Aide Mary Matalin: ‘What is the Exit Strategy?’

Former Dick Cheney aide Mary Matalin checked irony at the door on This Week With George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning, criticizing President Barack Obama for not having an “exit strategy” for his proposed military engagement in Syria, and predicting he’ll blame congressional defeat on obstinate Republicans, who will, in all likelihood, be defeat’s author.

“What is the objective?” Matalin asked. “To punish? What is the trigger? Is it the number, or the act of poisoning? What is the exit strategy? None of these questions are answered.”

Matalin was part of the “White House Iraq Group,” tasked in 2002 with selling to the public the Iraq War, which famously hung its exit strategy from an aircraft carrier.

George Stephanopoulos asked Matalin if Obama had to win this vote to proceed into Syria.

“If he doesn’t, I’m sure he’ll blame the Republicans for being obstructionist, as he always does,” Matalin replied.

That’s actually a good, undercovered point. The House of Representatives is obstructionist to the point of dysfunction, and the minority party in the Senate has taken a YOLO approach to the sixty-vote filibuster. As pointed out by Blake Hounshell yesterday, this Congress can’t even pass a Farm Bill.
