Former DNC Chair Ed Rendell Says House Should’ve Focused on Omar’s Remarks: ‘The Worst Slur You Can Make to a Jewish Person’
On Thursday, Fox News Channel’s Laura Ingraham spoke with former governors, Democrat Ed Rendell and Republican Mike Huckabee, about the House resolution on anti-Semitism in the wake of remarks by freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN).
“The house voted overwhelmingly to approve a broad resolution calling out racism, and anti-Semitic comments without naming Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. And the Democrats seem to be, I don’t know, they don’t want to name her despite the fact that that’s what brought this whole thing up, obviously, initially, linking Jews to money, AND then talking about certain people having a divided allegiance to other countries,” said Ingraham. “Should it have been restricted to the anti-Semitism? A lot of Jewish Americans, at least on social I’m reading tonight, are pretty outraged.”
“I think it should have focused on the anti-Semitism, and it should have said that congresswoman Omar made a mistake. Because she did make a mistake,” said Rendell, who was also previously Chair of the DNC. “As an American Jew, I can tell you the thing that’s most cutting to me is when people talk about Jews and money and the Benjamins, us being sneaky people who control things by our money. That, to me, is the worst slur you can make to a Jewish person.”
Rendell said she has good points about how Palestinians are treated by Israel, but that she should make points substantively without name-calling. He said again that it should have been a resolution focused specifically on anti-Semitism.
“So I would’ve liked her to be named as having made a mistake that triggered this, thoughts of anti-Semitism, condemned anti-Semitism, and later on, we can condemn all sorts of hate speech,” said Rendell.
Huckabee and Ingraham discussed the prior rebuke directed at Rep. Steve King (R-IA), who lost committee assignments as well after his own racist comments. King was named in the resolution against racism that came after his remarks. Ingraham asked Huckabee why Democrats didn’t take similar action.
Huckabee blamed the freshman Democrats in general, saying that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is, to her credit, trying to handle the group, but that she has “her hands full with some of these young Democrats who really don’t understand what I call ‘basic playground manners’ when it comes to getting in a public office and it’s creating some real problems for the Democrats.”
As the segment ended, Rendell made one point about the comparison between Omar and King.
“In all good deference, I just want to say, don’t give the Republicans too much credit for what they did to Steve King,” he said. “It took them ten years to get around to it.”
