Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump often claims that he doesn’t get a fair shake from the news media, but on Tuesday morning, he found a sympathetic ear in Fox Business Network’s Maria Bartiromo, host of Mornings with Maria. Bartiromo began by asking Trump to respond to the letter signed by 50 Republican national security experts who oppose his candidacy, and which included former CIA director Michael Hayden, former Secretaries of Homeland Security Michael Chertoffand Tom Ridge, former Director of Intelligence John Negroponte, among others. The letter contained strong criticism of Trump, and included the conclusion that “he would be the most reckless President in American history.”
Trump went on a riff that sounded an awful lot like the statement he already put out about the letter, essentially blaming the letter’s authors for the state of the Middle East, and accusing them of trying to gain publicity, as Bartiromo lapped it up:
Trump: They don’t feel relevant, and because of that they form a group go out and try to get publicity for themselves, they hope that somebody else other than Trump wins because that way they can get a job.
Bartiromo: I think you make a really good point, it was that exactly that the people fighting against, this elitism, something that you have squarely put on the front of the table here.
The letter comes after a particularly bad week for Trump, and along with the news that Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) won’t be supporting his candidacy, figures to trip up his attempt at a reset with Monday’s economic speech.
