Fox News chief Roger Ailes has signed a multi-year contract with 21st Century Fox, guaranteeing another few years of his leadership over the cable news outlet.
The news comes after months of speculation about Ailes’ future, with the latest reports indicating contradictory information over whether he would continue reporting directly to NewsCorp CEO Rupert Murdoch, or to his sons James and Lachlan Murdoch, who do not have as friendly a relationship with the Fox News head.
One week ago, 21st Century Fox spokesman Nathaniel Brown cleared the air by saying “Roger will report to Lachlan and James but will continue his unique and long-standing relationship with Rupert.” But in breaking the news of a new contract, here’s what Fox anchor Bill Hemmer had to say Thursday morning [emphasis added]:
We can now announce that Mr. Ailes has reached a mulityear deal with 21st Century where he will continue to lead the Fox News Channel, the Fox Business Network, and the Fox television stations. Mr. Ailes will jointly report to Rupert Murdoch and his sons, Lachlan and James Murdoch.
Indeed, 21st Century Fox’s official press release outright stated that “The announcement was made by Rupert Murdoch, Lachlan Murdoch and James Murdoch, to whom Mr. Ailes will jointly report.”
So that settles the questions of to whom Ailes will answer.
