Fox News Whines About Report on Melania’s Hair. They’ve Called Michelle Obama a Fat ‘Baby-Mama’
Fox News is fixated on an alleged wave of media attacks on First Lady Melania Trump‘s new hair color, but are conveniently ignoring their own history of viciousness toward former (and forever) First Lady Michelle Obama.
On Thursday afternoon’s edition of Fox News’ Your World, Federalist commentator Bre Payton accused the media of being “sexist bigots” for pointing out the new hair color that Melania Trump unveiled during her interview with Sean Hannity. And on Friday morning, Fox & Friends First devoted two segments to the issue, claiming that “a lot of folks went into overdrive trying to figure out if there was a deeper meaning behind her hair change.”
They even read a comment from a Facebook user who said “If I pitched this story to my editor I would get fired.”
As it turns out, the “lot of folks” they were talking about consisted of Rhonda Garelick, who admirably managed to squeeze out 600 words on the subject for New York‘s ” premier destination for women with stylish minds,” The Cut. No, it wasn’t a very nice article, but writers gotta eat. As hot takes go, it ranks well below Why the Whitest People Make the Best Leaders on the thermometer.
On its face, Fox News is being incredibly oversensitive about Melania Trump, based on a single article over analyzing her dye job. But their newfound sensitivity for criticizing first ladies ignores their own lengthy history of viciousness toward Michelle Obama.
Who could forget that time Fox News referred to Mrs. Obama as “Obama’s Baby Mama” in a chyron, during a segment hosted by none other than Megyn Kelly? Kelly, you may recall, went on to declare that Santa Claus is white, then moved to NBC where she lost her show after wondering what the big deal is about blackface.
Then there was the time then-Fox News anchor E.D. Hill accused Mrs. Obama of sharing a “terrorist fist jab” with her husband.
Fox News’ Outnumbered hosts also found Michelle Obama guilty of being an “annoying” (totally not uppity) “duchess” by trying to get kids to eat healthier, and Fox News contributor Dr. Keith Ablow said she needed “to lose a few.”
Sean Hannity once attacked Michelle Obama for making a rap video encouraging kids to go to college, and even seemed to suggest that the effort was somehow detracting from efforts to fight terrorism.
“ISIS is on the rise, the Middle East, in complete turmoil, the Western world is under constant threat from Islamic jihadists,” Hannity declared, “but, your First Lady Michelle Obama is busy making a rap music video about going to college.”
And who could forget now-former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly, who even while trying to be “nice” managed to white-splain slavery to Michelle Obama. O’Reilly patiently explained that the slaves who built the White House were “well-fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government,” referred to slaves as being “hired,” and generously allowed that “Michelle Obama is essentially correct in citing slaves as builders of the White House, but there were others working as well.”
It is true that Melania Trump has faced some unwarranted criticism, as well as some that has been warranted. But until a major network calls her a fat secret terrorist baby-mama with an incomplete understanding of her own ancestors’ enslavement, maybe Fox News should simmer down.
