Fox Sources: Baltimore Mayor Ordered Police to Stand Down During Riots
Fox News is reporting that Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake ordered police officers to “stand down” as rioters and looters were vandalizing and setting fire to buildings in the city on Monday.
Fox correspondent Leland Vittert, who has been lauded for his reporting in Baltimore over the past few days, explained to the hosts of The Five that a senior law enforcement source gave him the information.
According to FoxNews.com’s online report, the source said, “you are God damn right it was” the mayor who directly ordered the police chief to have his officers stand down. Vittert said on-air Wednesday that the mayor’s direct quote was: “let them loot; it’s only property.”
Rawlings-Blake has been under fire for comments she made that some viewed as justifying and supporting violent protests. On Monday, she called the rioters “thugs” and announced the institution of a mandatory, city-wide curfew, but was immediately condemned for her apparent lack of preparedness. On Wednesday, Rawlings-Blake apologized for using the word “thugs” to describe the demonstrators.
The Five co-host Kimberly Guilfoyle asked Vittert if the stand-down orders might have come from the White House or Department of Justice, but Vittert quickly dispelled that rumor.
