Fox’s Greta Apologizes to Christie for Saying He ‘Hugged’ Obama
Fox News host Greta Van Susteren apologized to Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ) on Thursday evening for previously having said he “hugged” President Barack Obama three years ago.
Conservative critics of Christie have long pointed to the supposed “hug,” which spawned from a photograph of the governor greeting President Obama in New Jersey after Hurricane Sandy ravaged the state in October 2012.
Rival GOP presidential candidate Rand Paul derisively referred to the “big hug” during last week’s first primary debate.
But in a clip first flagged by TPM, On the Record host Van Susteren admitted to Christie that she and everyone else were wrong to describe it as a hug.
“I’ve probably said ‘hug’ a million times on the air,” she confessed to the governor. “I look at the picture, that’s no hug. I’ve got to say — I’m sorry about the hug.”
“I appreciate that,” Christie replied. “It was a handshake, as you can see. I think that’s what civilized people do when someone comes to your state when they come to offer help.”
“Obviously, I don’t like to get it wrong,” the host said. “I think at least I’ve been unfair to you on that so-called ‘hug.’ That’s no hug.”
