Fox’s Henry Presses Earnest: Obama Thinks He’ll Beat ISIS Without Ground Troops?
Fox News’ Ed Henry questioned White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest Thursday afternoon about whether President Barack Obama believed he could defeat ISIS without U.S. ground forces, especially given that former Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a recent interview that it would be impossible to defeat ISIS without boots on the ground. Earnest told Henry Obama was well aware ground troops would be required, it’s just that there wouldn’t be American ground troops.
“I think [Gates’ opinion] is consistent with what I just said,” Earnest said. “It’s going to require combat boots on the ground.”
Henry insisted that Gates had insisted that he meant U.S. troops.
“I didn’t see the entirety of his remarks,” Earnest replied. “I’m not sure that’s what he is implying. …There is a basic strategy that the president has laid out, and it does include boots on the ground. The question is whose boots on the ground is it going to be? They are not going to be U.S. boots on the ground engaged in combat operations in Iraq and Syria.”
Henry added later that it was unclear what would happen if ISIS fired upon U.S. military personnel, who are in Iraq acting as advisors.
