American Josh Holt Says He’s ‘Overwhelmed with Gratitude’ for His Release from Venezuelan Prison
President Donald Trump met with recently released American Josh Holt on Saturday night in the Oval Office where Holt expressed his gratitude for the Trump administration and others who had intervened on behalf of a “normal person” to secure his freedom.
“I’m just overwhelmed with gratitude for you guys, for everything that you’ve done,” Holt said, noting it was “very, very difficult two years.”
He also joked that serving time in Venezuela was “not really the great vacation that I was looking for.”
Trump responded by calling Holt brave.
“You’ve been very brave, actually, you’ve been incredibly brave,” Trump told Holt. “We saw what was happening inside of that prison, so you really have been very, very brave.”
Holt traveled to Venezuela in 2016 to marry Venezuelan Thamara Caleño but was arrested on charges of stockpiling weapons and attempting to destabilize the government.
Both Holt and his new wife were imprisoned and held without trial before the Trump administration helped secure the Holts’ release.
