FreedomWorks CEO Matt Kibbe Sees ‘Real Possibility’ of Dissolution of the GOP
Matt Kibbe, CEO of the group FreedomWorks – one of the conservative groups urging members of Congress to refuse a deal which would have ended the shutdown – appeared on C-SPAN on Friday where he was asked about a Washington Post opinion piece predicting a permanent split between conservatives and moderates in the Republican Party. Kibbe said he saw that as a real possibility.
“A surprising number of prominent Republicans are saying that at the GOP loses the 2016 general election, the party will go the way of the Whigs or formally split into a moderate and a conservative party,” Hallow writes.
“I think that’s a real possibility,” Kibbe said.
“Grassroots activists have an ability to self-organize, to fund candidates that they’re more interested in, going right around the Republican National Committee and the Senatorial Committee,” he added. “That’s the new reality. Everything’s more democratized and Republican should come to terms with that.”
“They still want to control things form the top down, and if they do that there will absolutely be a split,” Kibbe warned. “But my prediction would be that we take over the Republican Party, and they go the way of the Whigs.”
