Gayle King: I’m Surprised a ‘Smart Cookie’ Like Megyn Kelly Would ‘Make a Mistake of That Kind’
On Thursday night, CBS News host Gayle King weighed in on the controversy surrounding NBC’s outgoing Today host Megyn Kelly.
Earlier this week, Megyn Kelly made comments about wearing blackface on Halloween that sparked fierce backlash and recent reports suggests that she is currently negotiating an exit deal with NBC, which King assessed is “not looking good” for the Fox News alum.
Stephen Colbert then asked the CBS This Morning host about what she thought about Kelly’s remarks and her apology.
“Listen, I have blackface 24/7 so it is never an issue for me,” King responded. “I thought Andy Lack, who runs NBC, summed it up very nicely when he said it was a very unfortunate thing.”
King told the Late Show host that she and Megyn Kelly had “bonded” at the Kentucky Derby two years ago and that she likes her.
“I think she’s a very smart cookie, very smart at what she does, but I think she clearly stepped in it,” King continued. “She made a terrible mistake. And I was surprised that she would make a mistake of that kind because she’s very smart.”
“She does seem to be a smart person,” Colbert responded, “but it seems like an odd cultural cul de sac to have grown up on that the conversation that blackface is bad never drove by your house.”
“I agree,” King said. “And I didn’t like it when she said Santa Claus is white. She said a couple of things.”
“And Jesus is white!” Colbert added.
King concluded that she doesn’t “wish bad on anybody” and that Kelly is going through a “rough time.”
