George Papadopoulos: ‘I Was Shocked and Horrified’ by Russian Offer for Info on Clinton’s Emails
Former Trump campaign aide George Papadopoulos explained to CNN’s John Berman how he felt when he was told the Russians had thousands of Hillary Clinton’s emails and wanted to help them in the 2016 presidential election.
“You knew it was wrong that the Russians had the information,” Berman asked.
“Absolutely. That’s why I notified the FBI,” Papadopoulos said.
“You didn’t notify them until they came and knocked on your door,” Berman clarified. “And again this has to do with the Barr summery of the Mueller report here, because he writes that ‘the special counsel did not find the Trump campaign or anyone associated with the Russian government despite multiple offers from Russian affiliated individuals to assist in the Trump campaign’. Multiple offers. You weren’t only one who received an offer and didn’t go to authorities.”
Berman asked why didn’t Papadopoulos or anyone else went to the authorities when they were approached by people saying they had dirt on Clinton.
“I can’t speak for anybody else. And I can only speak for my personal experiences. I — in retrospect I probably should have gone to some authority when this person told me this information. But maybe it was a good idea I didn’t speak to anyone because as they described in my book, this man is no Russian asset, he’s no Russian agent and it’s quite obvious that he was working on behalf of western intelligence and his lawyer has said the same thing,” Papadopoulos explained.
“But there’s a pattern where people associated with the Trump campaign were offered help by the Russians and then didn’t report it. Could it be, you say you didn’t know what do with it. Were you embarrassed that the Russians were offering this,” Berman asked.
“I wasn’t embarrassed. I was shocked and I was horrified,” Papadopoulos said. “At the time, I thought this individual might have some sort of contacts with the Russians but he was well connected to the Europeans and Americans as well,” adding how he went with the FBI to their office voluntarily.
