George Takei Beams into The Colbert Report to Save the Midterms from Utter Indifference

As Stephen Colbert reminded his viewers Thursday night, despite the fact that this year’s midterm elections will be the most expensive ever, voters could not be more indifferent about the outcome. The whole thing reminded him of an old Star Trek episode in which conventional war is replaced by a computer program that just decides who should die. Why not do the same with our elections?

The host presented his Disinteporter 6700 machine, which is designed to either “disintegrate or teleport” the money that otherwise would be spent on campaign ads. But instead, it accidentally beamed Star Trek actor George Takei into the studio.

Fortunately, Takei was able to talk some sense into Colbert, and the American people:

“Democracy is a sacred trust, Stephen. Yes, it’s a messy business, but the will of the people must not be abdicated to a machine. Only by engaging more deeply in the issues and voting your conscience can we hope to move beyond the eternal gridlock that threatens to destroy our society. No matter how bleak things seem, you have the ability to change. Do your duty as an American, and as a citizen of the galaxy, and vote!”
