On ABC’s This Week today, George Will contended that even though Mitt Romney did nothing illegal regarding his time at Bain Capital or his offshore accounts, he is losing the argument on these issues to President Obama‘s campaign. He argued that the optics of Romney running as a businessman in the context of global financial scandal does not exactly work out in the Republican candidate’s favor.
Will admitted he couldn’t understand how Romney didn’t take care of all of these financial issues well before he ran for president this time around. He recalled when Romney was challenging Ted Kennedy for his Massachusetts Senate seat in 1994, he faced similar scrutiny over his financial dealings. Will explained why the optics of Romney’s business background don’t look good in the election.
“The Republicans have now nominated someone from the financial sector at a time when the financial sector is an extremely bad odor. Hardly a day goes by, the LIBOR scandal, TARP… all of this conditions the atmosphere in which this is appearing.”
Mary Matalin shot back by saying frankly that voters just “don’t care” about Romney’s taxes and offshore money when they have their own financial troubles to deal with.
