Giuliani Defends Trump Over Changing Stories on Don Jr.’s Russian Lawyer Meeting: ‘It Was a Mistake, I Swear to God’

Rudy Giuliani‘s interview with Chris Cuomo tonight had newsworthy content galore — but one of the more interesting portions dealt with Team Trump’s conflicting stories about Donald Trump Jr.‘s meeting with a Kremlin lawyer in 2016.

Trump’s lawyers undermined the White House’s previous claims today by acknowledging that the president was responsible for the administration’s initial, misleading statement about why the meeting happened. The revelation has breathed new life into the controversial episode, so Cuomo asked Giuliani why Jay Sekulow and other Team Trump members lied about the Trump scion’s meeting.

“You think maybe somebody could have made a mistake?” Giuliani asked sarcastically.

“It’s a lot of mistakes,” Cuomo dryly responded.

“Maybe he just got it wrong like I got a few things wrong at the beginning of the investigation,” Giuliani continued. “This is a complex investigation. First week or so, I got a few things wrong, and then it was clarified in a letter, and that’s the final position.”

Indeed, Giuliani has walked back a number of things ever since he became Trump’s newest attorney. He proceeded to use the matter as an example of why Trump shouldn’t give testimony to Robert Mueller under oath.

“It was a mistake, I swear to God,” Giuliani said. “It was a mistake. The guy made a mistake. He corrected it.”
