GOP Congressman Lambastes Trump’s Threat to Close Border: Struck Me as ‘An Angry 8th Grader’s Tweet’
Outgoing Republican Rep. Ryan Costello lambasted President Donald Trump for his insistence if he doesn’t get his wall, he will shut the entire southern border down.
Earlier on Friday, Trump said, via a tweet: “we will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall.”
We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with. Hard to believe there was a Congress & President who would approve!

Speaking to CNN’s Kate Boulduan Friday night, Costello said that threat by the president of the United States struck him “as an angry 8th grader’s tweet.”
He then stressed he wasn’t even sure that Trump could actually do that.
“I don’t really know to make sense of it because I don’t think he can do this even if he wanted to,” Costello continued on. “It probably violates NAFTA. I don’t think he’ll have much, if any support in Congress, nor do I think logistically he would be able to implement it. When you start throwing out vacuous threats like this, people stop taking you seriously in terms of how you go about negotiating.”
He then says that he gets that Trump is trying to blame Nancy Pelosi.
“I understand the desire to point the finger at Nancy Pelosi and say this is your fault or this is your shutdown,” Costello explained. “I am a Republican. There’s been plenty times where I can point to Nancy Pelosi and say I disagree with her. I think the ball is in her court but remember the president said that this is his shutdown.”
