Republican Congresswoman Renee Ellmers was caught on camera Tuesday telling a female acquaintance that she had gotten too fat and needed to lay off the pork.
“You’re eating a little too much pork barbecue. Whoo!” the North Carolina representative told Maggie Sandrock, unaware that news cameras lurked nearby. Sandrock is a local Republican leader who used to back Ellmers, but switched support to her primary opponent.
“Typical Renee,” Sandrock later told local CBS station WNCN. “She has become a mean girl on steroids, in my view.”
“I would consider her a friend, but certainly not a good friend,” she continued. “Good friends don’t tell you you’re fat, or getting fat.”
When confronted by WNCN, Ellmers was unapologetic. “She’s gained some weight, yeah. She’s put on a little weight.”
By the end of the day, Sandrock had the last laugh. Ellmers became the first GOP incumbent this year to lose her primary, a combination of pushback against her endorsement from Donald Trump and her attempt to stall a pro-life bill earlier this year.
