GOP Rep.: I Understand Comey’s Concerns About Republican Party, But ‘Where Else Are You Going to Go?’
In James Comey‘s appearance on The View this morning, he said that he felt like the Republican party had left him and people like him. Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) said he could understand why Comey feels that way.
“But, I mean, where else are you going to go?” he asked CNN’s Brianna Keilar. “You surely can’t go to the Clintons if you care about character. At the end of the day, you have to think: what’s the right thing for our country and I believe, although I have some concerns, I think most people do, I think that conservative values are the thing that help our country and those are best embodied in the Republican Party.
Keilar noted it was interesting that Stewart admitted to having concerns and asked what those specific concerns are, and Stewart replied that “public discourse has just dissolved into something that many of us are uncomfortable with.”
“I think the president sometimes says things and tweets things that don’t help me in my job as a congressman,” he said. “I think sometimes his critics are just over the top in their criticism of him and in the personal way that they attack him. I don’t think either one of those help. And I think, frankly, the American people are getting exhausted by it.”
“Every time I talk with people, whether it’s you or other people on the media or it’s just a guy at the hardware store, we end up talking about these things and it just seems like people are so weary about it,” he continued. “I hope we can do better. I just do. As we go into the midterms, and eventually we’ll be in the 2020 elections, I hope we can just lift ourselves up and look for a standard that’s a little higher than the lowest common denominator.”
The hardware store… or, perhaps, a Safeway?
