GOP Rep.: If Trump Fires Mueller, There’d Be ‘Tremendous Backlash’ from Both Parties

Earlier today on MSNBC, Congressman Michael McCaul––Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee––offered words of praise for special counsel Robert Mueller and said that it would be a serious mistake if President Trump were to fire him.

He told Andrea Mitchell that if Trump fired Mueller, “you’d see a tremendous backlash response from both Democrats, but also House Republicans.”

He added that Republicans would like a more “disciplined” and on-message White House so they’re better able to get their agenda through.

There has been a lot of speculation over whether Trump would fire the special counsel, and according to a New York Times report last night, people close to the President are “scouring the professional and political backgrounds of investigators hired by the special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, looking for conflicts of interest they could use to discredit the investigation — or even build a case to fire Mr. Mueller or get some members of his team recused.”
