GOP Rep. to Jake Tapper: John Boehner ‘100% Stronger’ After This Is All Over
According to Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC), House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is in a much stronger position now that Congress is likely to pass a bill to re-open the federal government and avoid default.
Asked by CNN’s Jake Tapper whether Boehner looks to be in a better or worse position now that a compromise has been reached, Mulvaney enthusiastically said: “One-hundred percent stronger.”
The South Carolinian lawmaker added that he and other “good conservatives” initially supported Boehner’s first suggested compromise bill on Tuesday, but that collapsed near the last minute. “We supported that compromise. We could not get him the votes,” Mulvaney explained. “That was our failure. We did not deliver the votes in the House. It wasn’t the speaker’s fault.”
Mulvaney said this despite speculation that Boehner’s deal that doesn’t include many concessions to the more conservative, “tea party” wing of the GOP could place his speakership in jeopardy.
