If Meet the Press host Chuck Todd had a time machine, he would almost certainly retract his statement that Democratic Kentucky senatorial candidate Alison Grimes had “disqualified herself” from her race before he turned the dial to 1933 and stopped Hitler.
Since the comment Todd has recoiled at its use in a GOP attack ad, tried to balance it out by saying incumbent Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had “disqualified himself” from his leadership position, and been called a bully by Grimes.
The comment continued to haunt him Sunday morning, when a question about whether McConnell should be Senate Majority Leader was greeted by Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) with a reminder that he’d already decided the race.
“Mitch is going to win in Kentucky,” Portman said. “You’re the one who said she disqualified herself, by saying he wouldn’t tell people if she had voted for Obama or not.”
“I meant that voters might think that at the time,” replied a clearly-annoyed Todd, who will definitely think twice before rendering so definitive a verdict.
