Republican Senator Bill Cassidy today asked CDC official Anne Schuchat about a possible link between illegal immigration and the outbreak of measles in parts of the United States. This questionable theory was put forth last week by another Republican, Congressman Mo Brooks, and even Dr. Ben Carson said “undocumented people” might be to blame.
Cassidy asked today in the cases of measles outbreaks, “how many were native-born Americans and how many immigrated here?” Schuchat said she didn’t have that complete information, but explained that “most of the importations of measles we have each year are in Americans who are traveling abroad and back.”
But Cassidy was still worried that immigrants “may have fallen between the cracks” and pressed her on whether U.S. law is strict enough in keeping unvaccinated people out of the country.
