GOP Senator Defends Whitaker: It’s Not Like Trump Appointed ‘Michael Avenatti or Justin Bieber’
Speaking to CNN’s Erin Burnett on Wednesday, Sen. John Kennedy defended President Donald Trump‘s appointment of Matt Whitaker as acting Attorney General.
During the conversation, Burnett noted that Whitaker has made a number of comments about the Russian investigation, suggesting that the acting Attorney General sees the probe like “a joke.”
“That’s true. That I don’t agree with,” Kennedy said. “But presidents are entitled to surround themselves with advisers of their choice. It doesn’t matter if it would be my choice or your choice or anybody’s choice. What matters is what the president thinks.”
Burnett then pressed Kennedy on whether he thought Whitaker won’t “be a back channel to White House on the Mueller investigation, the president won’t end it even though he’s gotten rid of Sessions.”
“I have seen no indication whatsoever,” Kennedy replied. “I have only seen speculation that Mr. Whitaker might do something.”
Then, the senator said this: “I think we ought to give the guy a chance and let him find the men’s room before we start bashing him. It’s not like the president appointed, I don’t know, Michael Avenatti or Justin Bieber.”
“But by your logic, it is the same because he has the right to put whomever he wants to be…by the argument you just made, it’s his choice,” Burnett said, pushing Kennedy’s prior argument.
“Well, you have to be a lawyer to be attorney general.”
Burnett noted that Avenatti then fit the bill.
“You have to be a sane lawyer,” Kennedy replied before the talk moved to other topics.
Kennedy spoke with Burnett following the news of Avenatti’s arrest on suspicion of domestic violence earlier today.
