Graham: ‘Thank God’ Confederate Flag Is Coming Down
On CNN’s New Day Thursday morning, Senator and 2016 presidential candidate Lindsey Graham (R-SC) praised the decision by the South Carolina legislature to no longer fly the Confederate flag on a memorial before the statehouse.
“The flag had to come down, and thank God that it has,” Graham said.
Graham said flying the flag had been rendered impossible by the assassination of nine African-American churchgoers by a white supremacist who had made the flag his emblem.
“The families of the victims made this possible, the way they embraced the man who killed their loved ones with love and forgiveness,” graham said. “Reverend Pinckney [also a state senator, killed in the attack] had been asking to remove the flag for quite a while. It made it impossible for my state and me not to embrace that request, because it did become a roadblock to us moving forwards after the shooting.”
Host Chris Cuomo reminded Graham that removing the flag was the first step of many, lest anybody think the matter of white supremacy and violence in the south had been solved.
