Great News, Miss USA Fans: Reelz Is Here for You
Rejoice, pageant fans! Cable news channel Reelz announced Thursday morning it would air Donald Trump’s Miss USA pageant.
The pageant was briefly a broadcast orphan after NBC and Univision pulled their partnership following Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants.
“The decision on the part of Reelz to acquire the rights to the MISS USA Pageant was based on our belief that this special event, and the women who compete in it, are an integral part of American tradition,” the network’s CEO said in a statement. “As one of only a few independent networks, we decided to exercise our own voice and committed ourselves to bringing this pageant to American viewers everywhere.”
The Hollywood Reporter pointed out that Reelz has come to the rescue of controversial abandoned projects before, in the case of The Kennedys in 2011.
Trump’s comments about Mexican immigrants, in which he accused Mexico of sending rapists and murderers across the border, have cost him considerable business partnerships, including with Macy’s and Serta. Meanwhile, the celebrity plutocrat is enjoying a poll bump from his semi-improvised presidential announcement.
Rumors that a backwater cable channel was where this retrograde event belonged in the first place went unconfirmed at press time.
