Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel sat down with CNN’s Jim Sciutto today for a candid conversation about world affairs. Right off the bat, Sciutto brought up ISIS and asked Hagel about President Obama‘s commitment to taking out the terrorist group. He said that while Obama did speak earlier about a goal to “degrade and destroy ISIS,” he also said he wants to make them a “manageable threat,” suggesting containment.
And Sciutto asked, “Which it is? Is the mission goal to contain or destroy?”
After some introductory remarks, Hagel explained that Obama “was pretty clear” that “degrade and destroy” is the goal with ISIS. That “destroy” part was particularly evident in Vice President Joe Biden‘s comments today that the U.S. will follow ISIS “to the gates of hell… because hell is where they will reside.”
Hagel said Obama is similarly dedicated to a strategy to take out ISIS. When Sciutto pressed him a bit, Hagel insisted, “the mission is very clearly… to degrade and destroy ISIS’ capability.”
