Haley Barbour: ‘Barack Obama Is The Great Uniter Of Republicans’

Outgoing Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour, the former chair of the RNC, was a guest on CBS This Morning Monday, and hit on everything from the “unusual” possibility of a brokered convention to what he believes to be a tepid economic recovery under President Obama. He saw some danger, he explained, in having the four GOP candidates constantly duking it out, as they have been a distraction for the President’s poor policies.

“Any time we’re not talking about Obama’s policies,” Barbour explained, “we’re not talking about what’s the best thing for Republicans in the election.”

Host Charlie Rose quizzed Barbour on whether he thought there might be a brokered convention, especially if Mitt Romney loses Michigan on Tuesday. Barbour deemed it an “outside possibility,” not fully dismissing the idea, but saying it was “unusual” in American politics. “Usually the primary voters come to a conclusion,” he said,” and thus far they haven’t.”

Eventually, the idea of “electability” of the candidates came up, with Rose saying that voters saw Romney as the candidate with the best chance of beating President Obama. Barbour agreed that — after having been through 12 Presidential elections already — he’s hearing the term “electability” much, much more often.

“I will tell you this,” he concluded, “whoever we nominate, Barack Obama is the great uniter of Republicans.”
