Haley Barbour To MSNBC: I Would ‘Hold My Nose’ And Accept Higher Taxes For Fiscal Cliff Deal

Former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour told the crew at Morning Joe Tuesday that if Democrats would agree to tax reform and entitlement cuts, he would agree to higher tax rates despite the fact that it’s “bad economics and bad for jobs.” Barbour made his disdain for the idea clear, saying “I would hold my nose to get the deal done.”

Barbour was once the head of the Republican National Committee and said that he was looking for a deal which enveloped the “whole package,” instead of a one-sided plan for Democrats only: “What I wouldn’t do is vote for that and do nothing else.” He gave some examples, saying, “We gotta control defense spending, we gotta control other discretionary non-defense spending.”

Steve Rattner, who served in the United States Treasury Department under President Obama, agreed, saying, “I think, to get a big deal we’re all going to have to hold our nose a little bit and accept things we don’t want.” Rattner said he believed the president was also willing to compromise and that he was “ready to do serious business on entitlements and wants the Republicans to do serious business on [tax] rates.”
