HBO is taking swift action to correct the bizarre revelation earlier this week that their fantasy series Game of Thrones surreptitiously featured the severed head of President George W. Bush on a spike, because those were apparently the only types of heads on set to use as props. According to the New York Daily News, HBO announced in a statement yesterday that they found the use “unacceptable, disrespectful and in very bad taste,” and the head will not appear in future episodes or now halted in production DVD sets.
According to the report, HBO released a statement condemning the use of the presidential likenesses “in the strongest possible terms” and explained the network has “halted all future domestic shipments of the DVDs, removed it from our digital platforms and will edit the scene for all future airings on any distribution domestic or international.” Although those working on the series had made it clear that it was “not a political statement” (the discovery came from commentary on the first season DVD), and HBO had previously noted the DVD series would be edited, the removal of the episode from all platforms until the mistake is rectified and the head no longer appears was announced after the initial statement on the matter.
