‘He Endorsed a Leak!’: Brooke Baldwin Battles Andre Bauer Over Trump’s Retweet of Fox News Story
Over the past few months, President Donald Trump and his supporters have spent quite a bit of time railing against stories based on anonymous sources. Over and over, we’ve seen tweets from the president complaining about leaks, and recently Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a crackdown on government leakers.
Yet, despite all that talk, the president decided to take to Twitter today to retweet a Fox News story about North Korea that was based on unnamed sources. He did this even while US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley refused to comment on the report today due to classified info.
During a CNN panel discussion this afternoon, anchor Brooke Baldwin tussled with Trump-supporting political commentator Andre Bauer over Trump’s apparent hypocrisy on the issue of leaks as Bauer continuously defended Trump for embracing the story.
After Baldwin stated that Trump retweeting the report represented “total hypocrisy,” Bauer retorted that the president has the purview to declassify information he sees fit. This, of course, didn’t sit well with Baldwin, as she wondered aloud how this wasn’t “totally hypocritical.”
Later on in the conversation, when Bauer revisited his talking point about the president being able to declassify anything, Baldwin went in on him.
“I got to jump in because he has been obsessed with leaks and stopping the leaks,” she exclaimed. “And in this case, by retweeting this Fox News story, he endorsed a leak of classified information full of anonymous sources.”
Bauer responded by saying Trump might be sending a “specific message to an individual” and that this is the reason he declassified this information.
Shortly before this discussion aired, the president said that North Korea would be met with “fire and fury” if the country escalated the nuclear threat.
