A magnitude-4.4 earthquake struck Los Angeles just north of Westwood Monday morning, close enough to the various television studio lots that it rocked all the live newscasts on-air, forcing the broadcasters to improvise, and maybe freak out a little.
First, hats off to KCAL, the local CBS affiliate, whose four broadcasters never flinched as their set nearly collapsed around them. CBS even had its in-studio seismograph up before the building had stopped shaking:
KTLA actually (did what they were supposed to) hopped under their desks while yelling “Earthquake!”:
KABC also did not remain quite as seated:
KTTV, the Fox affiliate, was in the midst of a gag on kooky St. Patrick’s Day costumes when the quake struck, but segued right into earthquake coverage without missing a beat:
NBC actually threw into the next segment, on the health effects of dark chocolate:
