‘He’s the Strong Man I Can Admire’: David Gergen Explains How Trump Views Putin
In a panel discussion on CNN following President Barack Obama’s last news conference of the year, senior political analyst David Gergen noted that Obama has an extremely different view of the threat we face from Russians than President-elect Donald Trump does.
Highlighting that Obama laid much of the blame for both the atrocities of Aleppo and interference in the election at Russia’s feet, he stated that Trump has a “completely different sense of reality.”
“In effect, going we want to cozy up to the Russians,” Gergen said, explaining Trump’s viewpoint. “Vladimir Putin can be our friend. He’s the strong man I admire. I admire him, by the way now, 37% of the American people follow along with Trump and say that too.”
The former presidential adviser went on to say that Trump’s positions may make those in the FBI and CIA very uneasy moving forward and that they could fear that Trump may be hostile to them when he comes in.
