Homeless Man Jailed for Being Miley Cyrus’ VMA Date, Violating Probation
Homeless man Jesse Helt may have had the night of his life as Miley Cyrus‘s date to the Video Music Awards, but it did awkwardly lead to six months in jail after it was revealed he’d skipped out on probation to be in LA.
“I’d like to be viewed as a good person, not as a nuisance to society,” the 22-year-old Helt told judges at his hearing in Oregon.
According to the Kansas City Star, Helt had been arrested for breaking into an apartment in 2012, and subsequently violated his probationary period afterwards by moving to Los Angeles. Aspiring to be a model, Helt eventually ended up in a shelter for homeless youth, where he met Cyrus when she visited.
Cyrus ended up asking him to be her date to the MTV VMAs, where he accepted her award for Video Of The Year to bring attention to the plight of homelessness in America.
Eventually, Portland authorities realized that, hey, he totally violated his parole, and called him back to Portland to be sentenced. Cyrus was kind enough to pay Helt’s attorney fees, but the judge did not relent, despite Helt’s lawyers arguing that Helt had now found stability and hoped to enroll in community college. Helt was sentenced to six months, with credit for 57 days previously served.
Eh, still worth it.
