Bassem Youssef, commonly known as Egypt’s Jon Stewart for the Daily Show-like satire show he hosts in that country, was reportedly banned from going on air Friday. The BBC reported that the privately-owned CBC channel cited Youssef’s breaking of editorial policies and requests for more money in their decision.
Just last week, Youssef’s show, al-Bernameg (or Programme) drew complaints after airing segments that mocked Egypt’s ruling military, including jokes about “chocolate bars being made in the image of the general,” which led to an investigation ordered by Egypt’s public prosecutor.
Youssef was arrested and interrogated by the now-ousted Mohammed Morsi regime earlier this year. He has appeared on The Daily Show and recently hosted Stewart on his show in Egypt.
