‘How Does This Drain the Swamp?’: CNN’s Camerota Grills Blackburn on Ethics Office Vote
Alisyn Camerota had GOP Representative Marsha Blackburn on CNN’s New Day today, and the Tennessee pol faced a lightning round of questions over the GOP’s decision to strip major powers away from the Office of Congressional Ethics.
Blackburn, who voted for the measure yesterday, insisted that the decision did not “kill” the independent ethics watchdog, but that it would bring the OCE under the jurisdiction of the House Committee on Ethics and enhance transparency. Since the vote removes the OCE’s ability to launch independent investigations and review criminal violations, Camerota wondered if the vote meant that “basically it is Congress now policing itself.”
Blackburn countered that the Committee on Ethics is bipartisan, though Camerota grilled her further about why the vote took place behind closed doors and before the new Congress is sworn in. Blackburn attributed discontent from House Democrats to “partisan bickering,” but Camerota followed up and asked “what’s your response to when they say, ‘how does this drain the swamp?'”
