Howard Dean Praises Rick Santorum on MSNBC

Former GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum received praise from an unlikely corner today, as former Democrat presidential hopeful Howard Dean tossed a compliment his way while on live television.

During a segment on Clinton’s election loss memoir — What Happened? — on MSNBC Live, Stephanie Ruhle asked Dean what he made of the first female major party nominee’s main excuse for losing:

Here’s the person who had the most wisdom on this. I have never quoted him before, Rick Santorum. I was debating him in Toronto about three weeks before the election and he was asked this question. Before [FBI Director] Comey came out and he said these are two unpopular candidates, whoever they’re talking about last is going to lose — and what the Comey letter did was switch the conversation from Donald Trump’s ‘locker room talk’ about all the terrible things he had done that was in the Billy Bush interview, back to the e-mails, and think that made the difference.

Dean’s Santorum compliment was so out-of-left-field — if you will — that a bewildered Ruhle interjected to say, “Really?!”

The former Vermont governor and ex-DNC chair also weighed in on both the criticism and praise Clinton’s new book has been receiving by fellow Democrats. “She correctly identified that she was a flawed candidate. I think everybody — all of us — who have run and lost are flawed candidates,” said Dean — prefacing that he still believes President Donald Trump was the “more flawed” candidate, despite winning.

Santorum served as a Pennsylvania senator for two terms. He also ran for president and lost in the Republican primaries in 2012 and 2016, but landed nicely with a current gig as a CNN political commentator.
