Howard Kurtz Dismisses CNN Panel Saying Trump’s Iran Tweet is Distraction: ‘This Was Very Carefully Considered’
On Fox’s Outnumbered, host of Media Buzz Howard Kurtz took issue with a CNN discussion from earlier in the day that suggested President Donald Trump‘s overnight tweet warning Iran not to threaten the United States was just a way to distract from his own domestic problems.
Host Melissa Francis first tossed the question to Kurtz saying that it’s easy to observe that the President will do the opposite of whatever Barack Obama did, in this case, being harsh with Iran as opposed to Obama’s prior softness.
Kurtz nodded to the notion that Trump’s rhetoric went the other direction. “President breaking out the all caps and very rough language and reminiscent of the fire and fury and ‘little rocket man’ treatment towards North Korea before they decided to sit down,” he said.
“But here’s the thing,” Kurtz added. “Everything gets reduced to knee-jerk politics in today’s world. So already there was a CNN show to say ‘Well, is the president is doing this so he can overshadow the Putin press conference or even the Michael Cohen tapes? No. This was very carefully considered, this was not an impulsive tweet.
Kurtz pointed out that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo gave a speech talking about “hypocritical holy men” in Iran. “They decided to ratchet up the pressure,” said Kurtz. “And Twitter is one weapon that the president uses.”
The hosts and guest then discussed if the whole thing revolved around oil. Watch the clip above, courtesy of Fox News.
