Howard Kurtz Knocks Fox’s Bundy Coverage: We ‘Fell Seriously Short’
Media Buzz host and media critic Howard Kurtz rapped his own network on the knuckles Sunday when he said Fox News “fell seriously short” in covering Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy’s racist comments after it had devoted so much time to building him up in the prior weeks.
“On Thursday, all day long until Special Report at 6 p.m. eastern, there was virtually no mention of these racist remarks by Clive Bundy when everybody else was covering it,” Kurtz said. “I think to ignore a major story that was on the front page of the New York Times, at a time when the network, among others, had devoted a lot of time to covering this story and to building up Clive Bundy, gives ammunition to Fox’s detractors.”
The panel roundly agreed that Fox and the conservative media had jumped on the Bundy bandwagon far too soon and done damage to their own beliefs by association. Kurtz did try to pluck Bundy’s cause from the controversy, but seemed to correct himself mid-sentence. “It doesn’t take away necessarily from the argument—” Kurtz began, and then: “Although he was a lawbreaker who hadn’t paid his taxes.”
