Howard Kurtz Reacts to Fox Host’s Claim Media is ‘Doing Putin’s Job’: ‘Interesting Way to Put It…’

Fox News host Trish Regan made a claim on Friday that appeared to puzzle the network’s resident media critic, Howard Kurtz.

In a segment about the contentious battle between CNN’s Jim Acosta and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the two Fox News hosts hit the reporter for “grandstanding.”

At the end of the segment, Regan made an argument she’s espoused frequently this week: that the media, by criticizing President Donald Trump too vehemently, is helping Russian President Vladimir Putin sow division in the United States.

It’s the other side of the commonplace argument that Trump’s strange refusal to directly criticize Russia for election meddling helps Putin.

“I think that if you’re truthful with yourself and you’re truthful with your viewer, you need to be able to call the good and the bad,” Regan said to Kurtz. “There’s certainly been plenty of good. But you never see that on some of those other networks.”

“Unless your business model is to play to an anti-Trump audience,” Kurtz replied. “And I increasingly fear that’s the case.”

“Then we get back to, Putin wants to divide us,” Regan said. “You get the mainstream media doing Putin’s job.”

“Interesting way to put it,” Kurtz said, after a pause.
