Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Sanders — filling in for Sean Spicer Wednesday — said recently-fired FBI director James Comey had committed “atrocities” in his handling of the investigation into presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s emails.
In response to a question pointing out President Donald Trump’s praise for Comey in October, Sanders said that at the time, Trump was “a candidate for president, not the president — those are two very different things.”
Sanders also stressed Trump was swayed by the letter he received from deputy attorney general Rod J. Rosenstein, which lambasted Comey, as well as a “conversation that outlined the basic atrocities in circumventing the chain of command in the Department of Justice.”
“Any person of legal mind and authority knows what a big deal that is,” she added. “I think that was the final catalyst.”
The hyperbolic nature of Sanders claims drew the ire of some on social media. Watch Sanders above and see reactions below:
White House says Comey committed “atrocities.” But on Flynn said they didn’t want to smear a good man.

What “atrocities” has #Comey committed recently? Was it his asking DOJ for more money? Or perhaps he was getting too close to the truth?

.@SarahHuckabee said Comey committed “atrocities” at DOJ. Here’s the UN definition of “atrocities” https://t.co/TfOlmnkdeH pic.twitter.com/hWYW8bRjPv

Yates “betrayed” the president. Comey committed “atrocities.” What words will be left for people who actually break the law?

Comey doesn’t deserve to be accused of “atrocities” from the White House podium. Exceptionally poor choice of words by @SarahHuckabee.

?Lookups for 'atrocity' are up over 5200%. No one is looking up 'basic'. https://t.co/jrYYCNFWwl
