This morning, Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow made the Sunday show rounds to make the case that even though President Donald Trump sent out a tweet stating that he was under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller, the president actually wasn’t under investigation. As you’d expect, Sekulow got quite a bit of pushback from anchors today.
One of Trump’s biggest supporters, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, indicated today that Trump was not helping himself with tweets like that, stating it doesn’t “serve him well.”
Appearing on ABC’s This Week, Gingrich noted that the president “has a compulsion to counter-attack and is very pugnacious.”
“I don’t think that tweet helped him,” he added. “But it’s almost like — it’s who he’s been his whole life. He’s been a fighter his whole life.”
Recently, with reports that Mueller is investigating Trump for obstruction of justice, Gingrich came out and said the president cannot obstruct justice, despite voting to impeach Bill Clinton over obstruction of justice while in Congress.
