Erin Burnett‘s panel on CNN tonight had some harsh words for President Trump over his pardon of Joe Arpaio and his comment today about how high the TV ratings would be the night of.
David Gergen told Burnett that with the Latino vote growing, “this sends a message from Trump and increasingly from the Republican party that if you’re Latino, you’re not welcome in our party.”
President Trump defended his pardon by pointing to past Presidents’ controversial pardons and commutations, and Burnett asked Brinkley, “How does Arpaio compare?”
Brinkley said “Donald Trump is disuniting America” and continued:
“And the fact that he pardoned somebody who’s seen as a race-baiter, anti-Latino, somebody who is really the kingpin of racial profiling, and he pardons him in the middle of a catastrophic category 4 storm slamming into the Texas coast and has the gall in the East Room of the White House to tell people he did it for TV ratings… Clearly Friday wasn’t the right time, but he’s proud as a rooster over it. And I find it a bit demented.”
American Urban Radio Networks White House Correspondent April Ryan said that Trump’s “strategically placed news” came “at the peril of those in Texas right now” dealing with Hurricane Harvey.
