Seth Meyers met up with Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday night, where Meyers told his fellow SNL alumnus and late-show host that he’s the one to blame for Donald Trump‘s rise to the presidency.
During a conversation they had on The Tonight Show, Meyers brought up the interview Fallon had with Trump that became a source of controversy back in September. Fallon earned criticism far and wide from those who said he normalized Trump by playing with his hair and making no effort to challenge his politics.
Meyers has defended Fallon’s interview in the past, and last night he said that people should actually blame him for Trump’s victory.
“I was insulted by the reaction because I know after that happened you took some heat and some people said you are the reason he won,” Meyers said. “And I’m so insulted by that because I am the reason he won.”
Meyers was referring to the time he hosted the 2011 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where both he and former president Barack Obama teased Trump during their roasts. Ever since Trump entered the 2016 race, rumors persisted that Trump was at least partially motivated to run out of a desire for vengeance over the mockery.
“I kicked the hornet’s nest. You just rubbed the hornet’s head,” said Meyers. “Look, again, it’s not the outcome that I wanted, but it’s history. I got a man elected president. I want my points.”
