‘I Was Devastated’: Jimmy Fallon Opens Up About Backlash He Got for Trump Interview
Jimmy Fallon is now speaking out about the rather strong online reaction he got for messing up President Trump‘s hair during the campaign.
This moment (video above), for many, represented a bridge too far in the normalization of Trump’s candidacy, and Fallon got a lot of backlash for it.
In an interview with The New York Times‘ Dave Itzkoff, the Tonight Show host got candid about his reaction to all the backlash:
“I’m a people pleaser,” he said. “If there’s one bad thing on Twitter about me, it will make me upset. So, after this happened, I was devastated. I didn’t mean anything by it. I was just trying to have fun.”
He said it was hard for him to read the news after that, though he did acknowledge he should have addressed the controversy on-air at the time.
Fallon doesn’t talk about politics as much as Stephen Colbert does, and in the age of Trump, Colbert has scored big ratings wins (and attracted controversy for how far he’s gone in roasting the president). And while Fallon has been mocking Trump too, he doesn’t feel pressure to make any big changes:
“I don’t want to be bullied into not being me, and not doing what I think is funny,” he said more defiantly. “Just because some people bash me on Twitter, it’s not going to change my humor or my show.”
He added: “It’s not ‘The Jimmy Fallon Show.’ It’s ‘The Tonight Show.’”
