Iowa Voters Laugh At Joni Ernst Defending Trump By Saying He’s Standing Up For Norway

Over the past few days, the White House has been embroiled in a firestorm of controversy over Shithole-gate. As you may recall, during an immigration meeting last Thursday, President Donald Trump not only called immigrants from Haiti and African nations “people from shithole countries,” he also asked why the United States couldn’t take in more people from Norway (a country with a nearly all-white population).

Trump’s remarks have placed GOP lawmakers in an awkward position — condemn the president’s comments or defend him. While meeting with constituents earlier this week, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) was pressed on the president’s words as a voter asked her about “the damage that Trump is doing to our neighbors around the world with his white supremacy talk.”

Ernst’s answer caused the whole room to laugh.

With Ernst claiming that leaders around the world are supportive of the president and Trump is “standing up for a lot of countries,” someone asked her to “name a few” of those nations.

“Norway,” the Republican lawmaker answered — to clearly skeptical chuckles from the room.

“You laugh, but folks, who borders Norway? Russia,” she said in response to the guffaws.
