In an exclusive interview with CNN, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the White House of completely misrepresenting the deal made over Iran’s nuclear weapons. Secretary of State John Kerry touted the deal on Sunday, which reportedly says Iran will be eliminating some of its enriched uranium stockpiles and will “dismantle some infrastructure that makes higher-level uranium enrichment possible.” Zarif categorically denied today that any dismantling whatsoever will happen.
He said, “The White House version both underplays the concessions and overplays Iranian commitment.” He bemoaned how the U.S. appears not to be “sticking to what we agreed.”
Jim Sciutto asked what the difference was. Zarif said “the terminology is different” and when Kerry says there is a “dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program,” that’s simply false. He said Iran agreed “not to enrich about five percent, we did not agree to dismantle anything.”
