Answering a question from Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) about better background checks for gun purchases, Captain Mark Kelly broke the news to the crowd about yet another mass shooting, this one at an office complex in Kelly’s home state of Arizona.
“While we were having this hearing,” Kelly told the Senators and and others in attendance, “and we certainly don’t know the details, but in Phoenix, Arizona, there is another, what seems to be possibly a shooting with multiple victims. It does not seem like anybody has been killed but the initial reports are three people injured with multiple shots fired. There are 50 or so police cars on the scene.”
Kelly, who was either receiving updates on his phone or had someone whisper the news in his ear during the four hour session before the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the point that universal background checks that include mental health information could help prevent shootings like this one.
Reuters has reported that Phoenix Police spokesman James Holmes is confirming that at least three people were shot, with no known fatalities at this time.
